Another adaptation of Susan Hill's novel, this one is bigger budget than the made for TV version, but it doesn't really improve on it. Radcliffe is pretty good as the hapless lawyer, Arthur Kipps, sent to sort out the paperwork of the late Mrs Drablow at the remote Eel Marsh House. He is befriended by Daily, played ably by Ciaran Hinds, and learns that tragedy took the late Mrs Drablow's son and he drowned in the marsh. The superstitious locals believe that the ghost of his mother is visiting a terrible revenge on them. This is a well-made traditional ghost story and it has a few creepy moments. The screenplay isn't faithful to the novel or the first film and makes some annoying and unnecessary changes. If you like ghost stories then it's still worth seeing.
