Michael Kovak (O'Donoghue) is a newly ordained priest having a crisis of faith and he gets packed off to the Vatican to exorcist school, as a last ditch attempt to keep him in the fold. His cynicism aggravates the lecturer and so he is sent on a field trip with practicing exorcist Father Lucas (Hopkins). His scepticism is soon challenged. Any film about exorcism is inevitably going to invite comparison with The Exorcist and chances are good it will fall short, which this does. The Rite piques expectations because of the inclusion of Anthony Hopkins and while it doesn't come close to classic horror status it's actually a decent, atmospheric chiller. It's slow and predictable but it's also well-made, well-acted and creepy in places.
