This sumptuous homage to the werewolf flicks of old was a pleasant surprise for me. It doesn't deviate from the classic gothic horror set up and so the story is completely predictable but it does boast a great cast and some beautiful artistic direction. Del Toro is Lawrence Talbot, an actor upon the London stage persuaded to return home to his backwoods mansion and bitter father (Hopkins) when his brother's fiancé asks him to help find her betrothed who has mysteriously disappeared. Everything is terribly gloomy in the countryside and it seems a werewolf is running rampant and eating everyone in sight. As his father silently stalks the cobweb covered halls of his palatial home it's up to Lawrence to unravel events. There's loads of lycanthropic carnage and the film is surprisingly gory, albeit over reliant on CGI. It is a bit slow in places but this modern retelling of the classic werewolf genre is very nicely put together and I enjoyed it.
