The Wicker Man

An officious Police man from the mainland is called out to a small island village to investigate the disappearance of a local girl. When he arrives he gets a less than warm welcome and the islanders all deny any knowledge of the girl he is seeking. As he cycles round the island investigating he is horrified to find that sexual promiscuity is widespread and worse that paganism is taught in the local school. His morals are affronted and he becomes more and more agitated. His fruitless search for the girl eventually leads to one of the most memorable and horrific climaxes in cinema history. There is no monster, no blood or gore and elements of the film are actually done quite badly but the ending is dynamite and the atmosphere is chilling and creepy throughout.
