Cole is a young boy who can see the spirits of dead people which causes him a great deal of hassle especially since most of them don't know they are dead. He is ostracised at school and begins seeing a child psychologist who attempts to help him. This is a touching psychological thriller with a few chilling moments and it builds towards a fantastic twist ending. It was the film that made director M. Night Shyamalan a star but he has never managed to reproduce the same quality and the twist ending seems to have become something of a millstone around his neck. This was an obscenely successful film grossing nearly $700 million worldwide at the box office and there is no doubt it is an excellent ghost story which deserves it's reputation as a classic.
