The actual circumstances of Edgar Allan Poe's death are shrouded in mystery. He was found delirious, wandering the streets of Baltimore, and unable to explain what had happened to him. He died a few days later, aged just 40. In this movie a killer is re-enacting his stories for real and Poe teams up with a detective to try and track him down. Naturally his bride to be gets kidnapped for the final act and everything builds to a shocking revelation. It all looks expensive and relatively authentic, the cast are decent, the direction is competent, and yet it is all less than the sum of its parts. Maybe the predictable, formulaic plot is the main disappointment; maybe it's the dull dialogue, or the strange lack of tension. Ultimately it would be asking a lot to come up with a story that did justice to Poe's dark imagination, but this is woefully uninspired. It's perfectly watchable; just don't expect anything beyond a standard Hollywood serial killer thriller.
