This American remake of the Japanese original came just a year later. The story is slightly simplified but the setting was retained and luckily so was the director, Takashi Shimizu. It tells the tale of exchange student Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) as she is employed as home help in a house in Tokyo. Unfortunately for her the house is haunted by the vengeful ghosts of a mother and her son. This is faster paced than the original but retains the same chilling mood. Sam Raimi persuaded Shimizu to remake the film for Western audiences and he produces a cleverly crafted and delightfully scary ghost flick taking full advantage of a bigger budget and providing plenty of jumps for the audience. Definitely one of the better American remakes, this is a very creepy film.
