Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

Not being a fan of musicals Sweeney Todd never really appealed to me. Burton's take is based on the 1979 Broadway musical and it features a great cast. He brings the grimy streets of London to life in his usual Gothic visual style. The story focuses on Benjamin Barker who returns from exile to assume the mantle of Todd and exact a terrible revenge on his enemies. There are plenty of gory murders in the infamous barber's chair before the bodies are ground up for Mrs Lovett's meat pies. It's very atmospheric but for me musicals and horror don't mix well and this is no exception.
