A true crime writer moves his family into a house where the previous occupants were mysteriously hanged from a tree in the back garden. He has a film of the hanging tagged on to the end of a typical family movie. In fact, he has a whole box of them and there's a common thread that runs through them all. Can he uncover the truth behind them and is he putting his own family in the firing line? This starts out really atmospheric and extremely creepy and then it completely loses its way with a dull, horribly predictable ending. The acting is good, though there's an obvious heavy reliance on Ethan Hawke, and the direction is skillful, creating a number of tense build ups to set-piece scares - it simply doesn't maintain the high standards it sets up in the first half of the movie.
