This is Argento's final entry in the trilogy which began with Suspiria about three ancient witches inhabiting modern day cities. This time around the Mother of Tears is awakened and begins to run riot in Rome causing mother's to murder their children and arguments to escalate into murderous violence throughout the city. Sarah Mandy (Asia Argento) is an archaeology student who gets caught up in the mystery and though she is sceptical about witchcraft the strange events that befall her and boyfriend Michael soon convince her that there are things afoot beyond her understanding. It transpires she has powers of own and with the police unconvinced by her story she has to face down the witch and end the curse of the three mothers once and for all. There are loads of deeply chilling scenes in this film and Argento weaves his usual magic to create a rich tapestry of violence, sex and depravity. It never reaches the heights of Suspiria but it definitely has its moments and despite a weak ending this is a worthy way to finish his trilogy.
