In a Dark Place

Meek art teacher Anna Veigh is hired by busy businessman Mr Laing to look after his niece and nephew at a remote palatial mansion. This is a warped retelling of the Henry James novel The Turn of the Screw. The severe housekeeper is Ms Grose played by Tara Fitzgerald and she easily gives the best performance of the film, Leelee Sobieski plays Anna and she is a flawed character with abuse issues in her murky past. This is extremely slow and while parts of it are beautifully filmed it never builds any tension or indeed excitement. The script is littered with sexual references and it's all pretty unpleasant. It doesn't do the original material any justice at all and it certainly doesn't work as a horror film.
