Alex Borden is in his twenties and has a murky past; he was placed in care after his father apparently went crazy and murdered his mother in front of him. He begins to experience a hyper acceleration in intelligence after losing a game of chess but then all the people around him start to get brutally murdered. He suspects some kind of monster is responsible, the same monster that possessed his mother but it seems more likely the monster is a thin representation of his own psychosis. There are some intriguing ideas at play here but the film fails to explore them in any real depth and the plot came across as muddled and fairly dull. It is nicely directed for the most part and there are creepy touches and a bit of gore, it also features an impressive cast but ultimately this left me feeling flat and bored.
