This is a disturbing film about a family being held hostage and tortured in their remote country house by two mysterious young sociopaths. It's a remake of a German film with very few changes and director Michael Haneke is deliberately challenging the audience and pointing out the hypocrisy in our love of violent films. Funny Games is like a realistic portrayal of so called torture porn films (Saw, Hostel) which have become popular recently and Haneke plays with the situation as the torturers talk directly to camera and rewind the action when it suits them. This is uncomfortable viewing and the horror of the situation is very well realised but it is an unpleasant film to watch and the despair of the victims is palpable.
